Year End After Action Review

I want to thank the many of you who responded to the email yesterday regarding my One on One coaching program. If you haven't received a phone call yet about it - you will. At the end of each year (or beginning of each year depending on how you look at it), I always take an hour or so to really break down what worked and what didn't necessarily work and what I need to do to improve it.

This is a great tool for getting focused on the next few weeks and months in order to build momentum. Here's a quick list of some of the questions that I use for myself. Take the time to actually write out the answers rather than just answer in your head and keep the information handy so that you see if everyday. Here it is:

What went right this past year?
What did you learn this past year?
What could have been better this past year?
What would have made this year even more perfect?
What action did you make a commitment to this past year?
What challenges did you encounter with the commitments you made?
What new opportunity and positive results occurred because of your actions?

Mental "Tricks" For Creating Time in Your Life and Business, Pt. 2

So here I was, over and over again, in situations where I would want to learn to create time but I just didn't know what to do.

And I didn't know what would happen if I DID do something. I was afraid of the unknown. Questions like ‘how would I track someone working in another state or even another country’ played in my mind like a broken record.

Eventually, this led me to believe that there was probably something wrong with ME - that I should just accept and deal with it... that I was one of the ‘losers’ who just had to accept reality and deal with it – even if it wasn’t what I wanted.

Ever been there?

THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION...

Well, when I finally made the decision to learn about how to create time and outsource and it changed my perspective and even my world view. It was as if I was a different person.

So I went to work…but the thing I had to work at, believe it or not, was to actually become LAZIER. Yes, as crazy as it sounds, I had to lose all of those habits that I had developed of working hard and simply adapt some new habits. Everytime I got that urge to start working hard and putting my own blood, sweat and tears in…I had to step back and say ‘Is this my highest and best use of time right now?’

The answer was usually a big fat NO. That meant that I needed to now start using that thing between my ears to put together systems that would work with or without me. With a little practice, that became fun and I learned how to be creative with my systems and how to implement them over and over. Whoever thought becoming LAZIER would pay off!

Here's what I learned...

To begin with, I had to be extremely honest with myself and stop acting like I really enjoyed what I was doing with my time. Many of us just go around saying that we ‘like our jobs’ or ‘we love what we do’ when in reality, we hate the idea of getting up everyday and going anywhere. Once you get clear and stop making the excuse that you like what you do, then things can really start to happen…

Explained differently, out of the many times I’ve really sat down with someone and got CLEAR with them on what their next step is…it usually was successful when they were at the point of saying, ‘I really don’t like what I do.

I wish I could spend my time differently and what I really desire in my life is FREEDOM.’

You know, it's been too long since we talked about how to literally ‘create time’ in your life and business. I thought it might be time to have another conversation about it, and give you some more

great ideas...

THE CHALLENGE...

I can still remember exactly what it was like before I learned some of the secrets of how to do this at will.

I have very clear memories of what is was like slaving away on a day to day basis and knowing that my future only held more of it. It was like that song where my future was so bright that I had to wear shades.

No, not at all.

My future was more hard work…

But WHY?

Why didn't I just say, “I need to do something a little different than I’m doing right now, I need to think just a little differently.”

The fact is that I was AFRAID.

I was afraid that I'd do the wrong thing and wind up putting myself into a bigger mess than before. But all of that was just a small man’s mentality. I knew I was bigger than that and capable of so much more. At the time, I just figured that my life had to end up similar to how most people live. I thought it would have to be a life of working 50 and 60 hour work weeks and coming home too tired to focus on my other business interests.

None of the people around me seemed to really relate to me when I would bring these topics up around them. They always looked at me strange when I talked about being an entrepreneur or creating time in my life so that I could pursue FREEDOM.

My friends REALLY thought I was strange when I first started outsourcing. Way back in 2003, I first started using virtual assistants and my first experience was using VA’s in India. I would hop on Skype (back when it only had audio capabilities instead of video) and I would spend about 10 minutes every morning with one of my VA’s setting up my day and outlining what needed to be done. When I told my friends that I was on the phone with India, they looked at me like I had just gotten out of a 12 step program or something. In fact, I may have even lost a
friend or two during time because our interests changed...
